  • 3 lukewarm at the Rasoi

We went to the Cafe Rasoi to eat in, after we had some very good take aways from there. We went on a Friday night and although we went on one of the coldest days in January, the restaurant was freezing! They had a heater at the front but we were seated at the back, despite the restaurant being empty. The take away dept was doing a roaring trade and maybe the heater had been put there for their benefit. The service was very slow and the food was cold, but otherwise very tasty, although they got our order wrong twice. We have since been back for take aways and they have been excellent. I think they should maybe have put some warmers on our table, but they use fine china tableware so this probably wasn't a great idea! I like the fact that they avoid using lots of colourings and the food isn't over seasoned with salt, they do the basic curry 'favourites' very well, although I have yet to try some of the more exotic dishes. They have been very friendly to us on each occasion we have visited and in general I think this is one of the best indian restaurants in East Sussex, we've tried lots!

  • 4 Best in town

Cafe Rasoi is not a cafe but a fairly up-market and modern Indian Restaurant in Heathfield, East Sussex. There are two others in town but Cafe Rasoi is by far the best, but probably the most expensive. The welcome is warm and genuine, the food is freshly prepared and the flavours, whilst not outstanding, are very good. I think heat in the food is toned down for a more sophisticated taste - this is not the traditional curry house with plenty of very hot food. Portions are good (not mean and not excessive) and quality plates and cutlery are used. Tables are just the 'wipe clean' style but that is OK. You get a complimentary drink and chocolates with the bill, which is always welcome. Saturday night's can be lively and noisy. the lack of soft furnishings mean that sound in Cafe Rasoi reverberates and echos. Sometimes the music can also be intrusive. But overall it is a good restaurant and I would give it 15/20. My benchmark is The Veeraswamy in Central London, so 15/20 for a provincial restaurant is actually very good indeed. Best time to go though is mid-week unless you want a very noisy night out.
